China urges Indonesia to help resume Ukraine-Russian talks
China urges Indonesia to join its efforts to revive negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
China’s Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs, Li Hui, visited Indonesia and met with the Director for American and European Affairs at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Umar Hadi.
The Chinese envoy stated that the war between Russia and Ukraine still carries risks of escalation and expansion, emphasizing that the top priority is for all parties to work together to cool down the situation.
Li Hui suggested that Indonesia assist in bringing Ukraine and Russia back to the negotiating table.
"China is ready to cooperate with Indonesia to promote the five principles of peaceful coexistence and the ‘Bandung Spirit,’ and jointly create conditions for the rapid resumption of direct dialogue and negotiations between the relevant parties," the statement reads.
The Indonesian representative noted that they appreciate China’s role in promoting a political resolution to the "Ukrainian crisis."
"Indonesia is ready to work with China and the relevant parties to uphold the principles of collectivity and inclusiveness and to collaborate in finding a way out of the crisis," the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
China’s stance on war in Ukraine
China claims to maintain a neutral stance regarding the war that Russia has initiated against Ukraine. Beijing has stated its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, while simultaneously deepening economic cooperation with Moscow.
Chinese companies have also been supplying Russia with dual-use goods that could be used in the war. However, there has been no official confirmation of Chinese weapons being transferred to Russia.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged China to stop supplying Russia with dual-use goods and hinted at the possibility of intensified sanctions. Additionally, the US and Australia have called on Beijing to influence Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.
