Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning called for respect for all countries' sovereignty following developments in Venezuela, but did not say whether that also applies to Ukraine, the Global Times reports.

Sovereignty question

Mao Ning once again reiterated that China's position on the Ukraine crisis (as Beijing refers to Russia's war against Ukraine — ed.) is "very clear."

When asked whether China's call to respect the sovereignty of all countries following the events in Venezuela also applies to Ukraine, she noted that from the very first day of the crisis, China has persisted in promoting peace and facilitating talks, and pushing for a political settlement, adding that China's objective and impartial stance and the efforts it has made are evident for all to see.

Regarding Venezuela, the Chinese side indirectly criticized Washington's use of force, urging the international community to act in accordance with international law.

According to the spokesperson, China's objective and impartial stance is evident to all, and Beijing will continue to promote the concept of global security through diplomacy rather than sanctions or military operations.

US operation in Venezuela

On the morning of January 3, the United States carried out a military operation in Venezuela. A series of airstrikes on strategic targets in Caracas and other key regions of the country accompanied the attack.

Later, US President Donald Trump officially announced the detention of Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Washington has brought narco-terrorism charges against them.

The military operation was preceded by repeated demands from Donald Trump directed at Nicolás Maduro. The US leader insisted on the return of what he described as "stolen assets, land, and oil," but official Caracas ignored Washington's calls and threats.

Trump's accusations of asset seizure are linked to the nationalization of oil fields in Venezuela that had previously belonged to US corporations. This process began during the presidency of Hugo Chávez, Maduro's predecessor.
