China wants "complete reunification" with Taiwan and will deliver a harsh response to any country that provides the island with weapons, states Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to ABC News.

Wang Yi criticized the "pro-independence forces in Taiwan" and the Japanese leadership for "openly challenging China’s sovereignty." According to him, Japan’s current leaders are allegedly openly defying China’s territorial sovereignty, the historical outcomes of World War II, and the post-war international order.

"In response to the continuous provocations by pro-independence forces in Taiwan and the large-scale U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, we must resolutely oppose and strongly counter them," said the Chinese foreign minister.

He also reiterated China’s commitment to "complete reunification" with Taiwan.

New US aid for Taiwan

In December, the US State Department announced that Taiwan would receive an arms package worth over $11 billion — the largest US weapons sale to the island to date. The shipments include missiles, drones, artillery systems, and military software.

Under US law, the country is obliged to provide Taiwan with means for self-defense. President Donald Trump has even urged Taiwan to purchase more American military equipment, stating that the island should spend up to 10% of its GDP on defense.

In response, China launched two days of military exercises around Taiwan on Monday. These maneuvers are also largely seen as a response to Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s new prime minister, who last month drew Beijing’s displeasure by hinting at possible Japanese military intervention over Taiwan.
