China or Türkiye could replace US as mediator in Ukraine war

While the United States is trying to act as a mediator in ending the war in Ukraine, Europe is already discussing possible alternatives, stated Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.
During a conference with European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas, Sikorski said that if the US fails in its role as mediator, other candidates may step in.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that he wishes the United States success in its efforts to negotiate between Russia and Ukraine. However, he added that if this path fails, countries like Türkiye or China could take over the role of mediator.
"Türkiye, which still has channels of communication. And above all, the People’s Republic of China, which is the only one with the leverage to force Putin to negotiate and lower his demands," Sikorski noted.
US peace efforts
US President Donald Trump has claimed since the beginning of his election campaign that he would be able to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. Initially, he stated he could do it in a single day, though that timeline has since been extended.
So far, after several rounds of negotiations between the US and Ukraine, as well as between the US and Russia, the war has not been brought to an end. Moreover, Trump recently remarked that Washington is "closer with one party," though he did not specify whether he meant Ukraine or Russia.
Meanwhile, it is known that a recent phone call took place between Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during which they discussed various political issues.
According to Trump, he is open to involving Erdoğan in efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
During the conversation, Trump emphasized the importance of Türkiye’s participation in the peace process and expressed confidence in Erdoğan’s ability to facilitate dialogue between Ukraine and Russia.
RBC-Ukraine previously reported on Erdoğan’s reaction to Trump’s idea regarding Ukraine and Russia.
It was also revealed today that Trump wants to involve China in resolving the war between Ukraine and Russia.
