China and Brazil issue joint statement on Ukraine war settlement

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Brazil's top foreign policy advisor Celso Amorim met on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. They issued a joint statement on the war in Ukraine, according to the press service of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"China and Brazil fully support the work of the 'Friends of Peace' group and will continue to play a constructive role in promoting a political resolution of the Ukrainian crisis," the statement said.
The Chinese foreign minister referred to China and Brazil as "major global powers and representatives of the Global South, who are jointly making a positive contribution to advancing world peace, stability, and development." He stated that Beijing is ready to strengthen cooperation with Brazil across various areas, support the key role of the UN in the international system, and defend the rights and interests of developing countries.
Amorim noted that Brazil is prepared to enhance Brazil-China relations in various fields and collaborate to protect international integrity and justice.
It is worth recalling that in May 2024, China and Brazil unveiled their so-called "peace plan," a six-point proposal for Ukraine. The plan emphasized that negotiations are the only path to resolving the "Ukrainian crisis."
The "plan" was actively promoted during the UN General Assembly in September last year. China, Brazil, and some other Global South countries agreed to create the "Friends of Peace" platform to help resolve the war in Ukraine.
Additionally, on February 15, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Munich. He invited his Chinese counterpart to Kyiv and called for discussions on the Ukrainian peace formula.
