Canadian, Latvian prime ministers discuss further aid to Ukraine
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a phone conversation with Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina. They discussed further support for Ukraine, according to the Canadian government press service.
The two leaders condemned Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine and reaffirmed their joint readiness to support Ukraine as long as necessary. They also discussed the regional and global implications of Russia's actions.
At the same time, Silina thanked Canada for the leading role it continues to play as an umbrella country for NATO's enhanced forward presence in Latvia.
Prime Minister Trudeau also reaffirmed Canada's readiness to work with allies to transform the capable battlegroup into a brigade.
Canada's assistance
Canada has supported Ukrainians in the war of aggression unleashed by Russia. In particular, Ottawa provided military, financial, humanitarian, and political support, and supported sanctions against Russia.
Also in May 2022, after the liberation of northern Ukraine, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Kyiv.
In September 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Canada for the first time since the beginning of the war.
Recently, it became known that Canada will provide Ukraine with 1.3 billion Canadian dollars (over 947 million USD) in military aid. These funds will be accrued until 2026.
