Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney cautioned that the decision over who controls Greenland does not fall under the authority of US President Donald Trump, according to Politico.
Carney specifically called on NATO allies, including the US, to honor their commitments, while emphasizing Canada’s support for Denmark’s sovereignty over the strategically important Arctic island that Trump had threatened to seize.
“The future of Greenland is a decision for Greenland and for the Kingdom of Denmark. We are NATO partners with Denmark, and so our full partnership stands. Our obligations on Article 5, Article 2 of NATO stand, and we stand full-square behind those,” Carney said.
He also said that he discussed Greenland’s and the Arctic’s sovereignty during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding that he found significant alignment of views on this issue.
Politico notes that Greenland has returned to the spotlight due to Trump’s rhetoric, which challenges US interests in the Arctic and has heightened tensions between Washington and the EU.
In addition, this week, Denmark and several of its allies announced they would strengthen their military presence in Greenland.
Situation around Greenland
Recently, US President Donald Trump stated that Greenland should come under US control to build the Golden Dome missile defense system. According to him, without immediate NATO action, the island could be at risk of being seized by Russia or China.
Meanwhile, on Friday, January 16, the US Congress announced that it is prepared to use its powers to block any unilateral actions by Trump regarding Greenland.
Germany has not ruled out boycotting the 2026 World Cup if Trump attempts to seize the island.
