Canada has appealed to the United States to promptly deliver the NASAMS anti-aircraft missile system ordered for Ukraine, which was requested in the spring of last year, reports the Globe and Mail.

According to the media outlet, Canadian representatives mentioned that payment for NASAMS for Ukraine was made in March 2023. However, the shipment is delayed because the governments of the United States and Ukraine need to conclude an agreement on the sale of military equipment abroad. Currently, negotiations are ongoing on this matter.

"Defence Minister Bill Blair reportedly met with the U.S. ambassador to Canada, David Cohen, last week to request that the process be expedited," journalists clarified.

Background

Canada paid the U.S. government $406 million for the NASAMS air defense system for Ukraine in March 2023.

However, the anti-aircraft missile system has not yet been transferred to Ukrainian defenders, despite almost a year passing.

It is worth noting that NASAMS is already in service with Ukraine, with deliveries starting in November 2022.
