Canada opposes Russia’s return to G7 – Ambassador

Canada opposes Russia’s return to the G7, emphasizing that Ukraine remains a priority for the group, stated Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine Natalka Cmoc at the Kyiv Security Forum.
She commented on US President Donald Trump's claim that excluding Russia from the G7 had been a "mistake."
Cmoc stressed that it was important to remember why Russia was excluded from the group, pointing out that the decision was made in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea and that the conditions had not changed. She stated that Canada was not prepared to reconsider Russia’s membership and would stand firm.
She also highlighted that G7 support for Ukraine would continue, particularly in the form of sanctions against Russia. Cmoc noted that strengthening these sanctions in new areas, making them more flexible, and resolving the issue of circumventing these sanctions would remain a priority.
Trump's statement
Last week, Donald Trump announced his intention to restore the G8 format.
Following his remarks, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized that there could be no normal cooperation with Russia as long as it is ruled by Vladimir Putin.
