Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Mélanie Joly, has announced a new package of sanctions against Russians. It includes 6 individuals, according to the Canadian government.

A new package of sanctions related to the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the gross and systematic human rights violations in Russia has been announced.

The list includes:

  • Igor Rakitin, Head of the Department of the Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug
  • Vadim Kalinin, head of the correctional colony in the town of Kharp;
  • Alexander Voropaev;
  • Marina Bobek;
  • Katerina Frolova;
  • Kirill Nikiforov.

This likely includes investigators, prosecutors, and judges who were in some way connected to Navalny. Canada will ban them from entering and freeze their assets if found. Canadian companies and individuals will also be prohibited from providing financial services to sanctioned individuals.

Sanctions over the death of Alexei Navalny

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died in a penal colony on February 16. According to propagandists, he suffered a thrombus detachment during a walk.

Britain has imposed sanctions against the heads of the penal colony. Six Russians are included in the list.

The US has also imposed a comprehensive package of sanctions against Russia for Navalny's death and the war in Ukraine.

By the way, Australia has imposed sanctions against Russian officials associated with the criminal justice system.
