British intelligence: Russians took control of up to 550 sq km in Ukraine in July

Russian forces may have captured around 500-550 sq km of Ukrainian territory in July. The same amount of territory was occupied by Russia in June, according to the UK Ministry of Defence on X.
According to analysts, in June and July, occupying forces likely seized 500-550 sq km of territory in Ukraine following monthly increases since March 2025.
Russian troops continued tactical advances in the Donetsk region, mainly northeast and southwest of Pokrovsk. The occupiers are attempting to encircle the city and pressure remaining logistics routes.
"Russian forces have now occupied nearly all of Donetsk oblast territory south from Pokrovsk," the report states.
However, over the past two weeks, according to intelligence, the Russians have made no significant gains in the Sumy region. Constant losses and Ukrainian counterattacks have likely disrupted Russia’s plans to establish a buffer zone.
Reports indicate that units of the Russian 51st Airborne Regiment in the Sumy region are refusing to follow orders. Earlier reports mention complaints against commanders who are ordering infantry attacks with heavy losses.
Frontline situation
It is worth noting that the most active front remains Pokrovsk. In the past 24 hours, 45 enemy attacks were recorded there.
According to ISW analysts on July 31, Ukrainian Defense Forces advanced in one of the settlements near Pokrovsk.
Recently, the Russians circulated information about the alleged encirclement of Ukrainian units in Pokrovsk. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine denied this.
According to local authorities, the situation in Pokrovsk is difficult. It is almost impossible to enter the city or deliver humanitarian and medical aid.
