BRICS to be expanded with 5 more countries soon - media
Five countries will become new members of the BRICS alliance. Argentina, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia are likely to join, informs Brazilian UOL.
According to journalists, the main criterion for selection was a geographical factor. It should ensure regional balance within the alliance. States that are members of the G20 were also considered.
The outlet notes that the accession of another African country is also being considered. Brazil would like to see Indonesia as a member, but Indonesia is not ready to join BRICS at the moment.
The main opponents of BRICS expansion were India and Brazil. The latter insisted on the support of its bid for a seat on the UN Security Council in exchange for expanding the bloc. However, it remains unclear whether the BRICS members have reached a final agreement on this matter.
At the same time, according to the media, China does not rule out Brazil's entry but strongly opposes the participation of its regional rival, India, in the highest UN body.
The Brazilian publication also explains Iran's likely accession to BRICS. One of the main reasons for this is the influence of Russia, as Tehran is Moscow's ally.
BRICS Summit
On August 22, the BRICS summit of countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) started in South Africa. This year, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin did not attend the summit. The probable reason for this was his international isolation, particularly the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in the case of the deportation of Ukrainian children.
According to Bloomberg, the leaders of China and Russia wanted to use the summit to improve their international image and influence.
