Borrell reveals date of first deliveries of shells to Ukraine under Czech initiative
The first deliveries of artillery shells to Ukraine under the Czech initiative will take place in late May or early June, stated the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.
"We don't have to forget about the lack of ammunition with 155 caliber. Many countries have been joining the Czheck initiative in order to look for ammunition," said Borrell.
According to him, the first delivery will take place in late May or early June.
Borrell clarified that the issue of providing Ukraine with more air defense systems and 155 mm artillery projectiles remains the most important goal for EU representatives.
Artillery ammunition for Ukraine
Ukrainian troops are in dire need of artillery ammunition, and there is a shortage at the front. To cover this shortage, EU members planned to send 1 million shells to Ukraine, but so far this has not been done.
The Czech Republic said it had found a large number of shells outside the EU and began raising funds to buy them. Several countries have joined this initiative. At the end of March, Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte said that thanks to the Czech initiative, a large amount of ammunition would be sent to Ukraine in the near future.
Corriere della Sera reported that the participating countries of the Czech initiative for purchasing artillery shells for Ukraine have signed an agreement, under which the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive 1 million rounds of ammunition. This exceeds the initially planned amount.
