Biden-Scholz meeting could pave way for Ukraine to receive long-range weapons, Ambassador says
The meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz could help Ukraine gain new long-range opportunities, according to a statement by Ukraine's Ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova.
"The meeting is important. I really hope that they will also discuss the opportunities that we have not yet received. I hope it will push us towards long-range capabilities. We constantly remind both partners that they are very much needed," emphasizes the diplomat.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is currently visiting the United States. During the visit, the head of the German government intended to discuss military assistance to Ukraine with American officials.
In particular, the chancellor has already met with American senators who are considering new funding for Ukraine in the amount of over $60 billion.
Taurus for Ukraine
Since last year, Ukraine has been asking Germany for the transfer of long-range Taurus missiles capable of destroying enemy targets at a distance of up to 500 kilometers.
However, the German government has not dared to provide such weapons to the Ukrainian military. As reported by German media, Scholz himself opposes the deliveries, fearing possible strikes by Taurus on Russian territory.
Recently, a resolution calling for the transfer of Taurus to Ukraine was brought to a vote in the Bundestag. Deputies did not support it.
