Biden explains why he's dropping out of US presidential race
US President Joe Biden says if he had remained a candidate in the presidential election, it would have only led to further debate about himself.
Biden explains that the polls at his disposal showed that his positions were neck and neck with those of his main opponent, Donald Trump.
He notes that this would have been the case until the very end, but at the time, many Democrats feared that Biden's candidacy could harm the November congressional elections.
"What happened was, a number of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought that I was gonna hurt them in the races," Biden says.
"And I was concerned if I stayed in the race, that would be the topic," the US President explains.
Dozens of Democrats have called on Biden to pass the baton to another candidate, questioning whether he can beat Trump in November.
Biden withdraws from US presidential election
Last month, the incumbent US President Joe Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the election. This happened after prolonged pressure from the Democrats and several failed speeches by the President, including a disastrous debate with his main opponent Trump.
In his address, Biden proposed Vice President Kamala Harris as a candidate for the presidency.
