Biden discusses with Modi his trip to Kyiv
US President Joe Biden held a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which the two sides discussed the Indian Premier's upcoming visit to Poland and Ukraine, reports the White House.
President Joe Biden praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his historic visits to Poland and Ukraine - the first such visits by an Indian Prime Minister in decades - highlighting his message of peace and humanitarian support for Ukraine, including aid to its energy sector.
The leaders reaffirmed their unwavering support for a peaceful resolution of the conflict under international law based on the UN Charter.
They also emphasized their commitment to working together through regional groups like the Quad to promote peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
Additionally, they discussed the upcoming UN General Assembly meeting scheduled for September.
White House National Security Advisor John Kirby stated that Biden and Modi talked about the prospects for advancing President Zelenskyy's plan for a just peace. According to Kirby, the US welcomes any other country that wants to help President Zelenskyy work towards a just peace.
"Any country that's willing to come at that discussion by starting with President Zelenskyy's perspective, by hearing him out, by signing on to that proposal. And I won't speak for India and what they're signing on to or not; that's for the Prime Minister and his team to talk to. But we certainly welcome any nation that is willing to be helpful and to start that conversation by ascribing to President Zelenskyy's just peace proposal and getting his perspectives," Kirby said.
India participated in the Peace Summit but did not sign the communiqué.
Zelenskyy welcomed India’s participation and proposed that it host the next summit. However, for this to happen, New Delhi would need to join the communiqué from the first summit held in Switzerland.
Following Modi’s visit to Kyiv, the parties issued a joint statement.
