Biden allocates military aid to Taiwan totaling $571 million
US President Joe Biden has allocated $571 million in military aid to Taiwan. He has delegated the authority to manage these funds to the US Secretary of State, according to the White House website.
In his statement, Biden said that he is delegating the authority granted to him as president by the Constitution and laws of the US, specifically under Section 621 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.
"I hereby delegate to the Secretary of State the authority under section 506(a)(3) of the FAA to direct the drawdown of up to $571.3 million in defense articles and services of the Department of Defense, and military education and training, to provide assistance to Taiwan," the White House website states.
Earlier this year, Biden stated that the US could deploy its troops in the event of a Chinese invasion of the island. He did not rule out the use of American military force.
Additionally, just over a week ago, Reuters reported that China had launched its largest military exercises in 30 years, creating the most serious threat to Taiwan compared to previous military activities by Beijing. Specifically, the country is deploying its largest Navy in regional waters.
