Barack and Michelle Obama to deliver speeches to back up Harris at DNC
The 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, and his wife Michelle Obama plan to deliver a speech to delegates and members of the US Democratic Party on Tuesday evening, in which they will declare their support for the candidacies of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the upcoming presidential election, reports The Washington Post.
Barack and Michelle Obama's speech is scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, August 20, as part of the main program on the second day of the convention, which will run from 6 PM to 11 PM EST.
Before the Obama family's speech, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Kamala Harris' husband, lawyer and Georgetown University professor Douglas Emhoff, will also deliver their speeches.
A source from WP, familiar with the content of the Obamas' speeches, said that each spouse is preparing their own address. The former US president will explain to the convention members "why Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are precisely the leaders the country needs right now."
Meanwhile, Michelle Obama, according to the source, will tell the attending Democratic Party members how Kamala Harris is "ready to lead the country forward and turn the page on fear and division."
Democratic National Convention in Chicago
The Democratic National Convention is taking place in Chicago and will run from August 19 to 22. During the convention, delegates will officially nominate their party's candidates for president and vice president. The nominees will be the current US Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
On the first day of the convention, the current US President Joe Biden addressed Democratic Party members, urging Americans to vote for Harris and once again criticizing his predecessor, Donald Trump.
Before the current US president took the stage, Biden's daughter, Ashley Biden, gave a speech in which she offered a more detailed and personal portrait of her father as a politician and person.
Former US Secretary of State and 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton also delivered a speech on the first day of the convention. She expressed her support for Harris and publicly mocked the former president and Republican Party candidate Donald Trump.
