Baerbock warns NATO of consequences if it fails to support Ukraine
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has issued a stark warning of serious consequences for Germany and NATO if they fail to support Ukraine in its defense campaign against Russia, citing Der Standard.
"If we do not continue to support Ukraine, we risk facing Putin's troops on the border with Poland. War will soon be at the doorstep of the EU and NATO," Baerbock said.
She emphasized the difficulty in estimating the cost to the West of defending freedom and security, adding that "ultimately, it comes down to this: supporting Ukraine also keeps the war far away from us."
Baerbock also cautioned about potential new refugee flows, saying, "If Ukraine cannot defend itself anymore – and I say this to those who refuse support – millions more will be forced to flee. After all, who would willingly live under torture and occupation?"
Highlighting Germany's humanitarian efforts, she said that over a million Ukrainians have already found refuge in Germany. She underscored the critical need for additional support, asserting, "Failure would be fatal for both a free Ukraine and a free Europe. That's why the country needs additional support."
Baerbock reiterated her call to all partners worldwide to urgently deliver additional air defense systems.
Germany's support of Ukraine
Germany has played a pivotal role in providing military aid to Ukrainian defenders since the full-scale Russian invasion began. Its contribution stands as the largest among European nations.
Significantly, Germany's provision of advanced Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine has bolstered the country's defense against enemy airstrikes and missile attacks. In addition to the Patriots, Germany has transferred Leopard 2 tanks, PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers, and a wide range of other weaponry and ammunition to Ukraine. This assistance plays a crucial role in enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities and aiding its path to victory in the war.
Recently, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced a new aid package for Ukraine, underscoring Germany's ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
