Austria to allocate €2 million for humanitarian projects in Ukraine
Austria allocates €21.5 million from the Disaster Relief Fund for humanitarian aid in various parts of the world. €2 million will be provided for humanitarian projects in Ukraine, according to the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the press service of the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, global humanitarian crises caused by wars, poverty, migration, and advancing climate change pose a significant threat to the lives of millions of people.
According to the assessment of the United Nations, approximately 300 million people currently require humanitarian assistance.
"Our security in Europe also largely depends on the security and stability of our neighbors. Therefore, we must do everything possible to prevent illegal migration and also prevent the dangerous journey of people to Europe," said Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer.
€21.5 million will be allocated as follows:
- €9.5 million for projects in countries in Africa south of the Sahara;
- €8 million for projects in the Middle East;
- €2 million for projects in Ukraine;
- €2 million for a project in Afghanistan and neighboring countries.
Austria's position
The federal government of Austria, like other EU states, provides assistance to Ukraine in the context of the ongoing full-scale military aggression by Russia.
In 2023, Vienna agreed to allocate an additional €18 million to Ukraine to aid those affected by Russian aggression.
Furthermore, at the end of June, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer noted that the country aims to consider its neutral status in discussions regarding guarantees for Ukraine.
