Turkish forces shot down an Iranian ballistic missile that was heading toward Turkish airspace, according to the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
"The ballistic missile, launched from Iran, crossed the airspace of Iraq and Syria and was detected while approaching Turkish airspace. It was timely neutralized by NATO air and missile defense elements in the Eastern Mediterranean," the ministry said.
It was noted that a fragment of the missile that fell in the Dörtyol area of Hatay province came from the air defense system that intercepted the target in the air. No one was injured in the incident.
"We warn all parties to refrain from actions that could further escalate the conflict in the region. In this context, we will continue consultations with NATO and other allies," the Defense Ministry added.
Strikes on Cyprus
It is possible that the Iranian missile, which flew over Iraq and Syria and approached Türkiye, was heading toward Cyprus.
Over the past few days, Iran has attacked a British military base in Cyprus at least twice using drones, with reports of explosions near the runway area.
Amid the escalating situation, Greece has sent two warships to Cyprus to help defend the island. Reports also mention the deployment of a pair of F-16 fighter jets.
On March 1, it was also reported that Iran launched two ballistic missiles toward Cyprus, where British military bases are located. Both missiles were intercepted before reaching the island.
