Viral posts claimed that Kaiwa Technology had unveiled a pregnancy robot in Beijing.
Posts indicated that the device was created by scientist Zhang Qifeng and could carry a baby for 10 months in synthetic amniotic fluid for $13,900.
An investigation by Snopes and Chinese state media found that:
- There are no records of a company called Kaiwa Technology or a researcher named Zhang Qifeng
- No patents or official registrations exist for such a device
- The claimed price of $13,900 immediately raised doubts among robotics and medical experts.
Real state of artificial womb research
Although the humanoid pregnancy robot is fictional, scientists are making real progress in the field of ectogenesis—growing a fetus outside the human body—but only under laboratory conditions.
What has been achieved?
In 2017, researchers at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia developed the Biobag, a fluid-filled system that successfully supported premature lambs for 4 weeks without a mechanical pump.
