Apple is developing foldable smartwatch with dual display

A new patent reveals that Apple is considering a radical redesign of the Apple Watch with the possibility of a foldable dual screen and a built-in camera, reports TechRadar.
The patent, which was unassumingly titled "wearable electronic device," was filed by Apple back in September 2023 and published only on March 20.
As PatentlyApple discovered, the documents describe a wearable device consisting of a fixed and movable part, a display module, and an optical sensor that will presumably detect the opening and closing of the screen.
The patent notes that even the best smartwatches on the market are limited in screen size and functionality compared to smartphones, and therefore remain a second choice device for many users.
Apple emphasizes the "constant need to improve the functionality of wearable devices," which explains the company's revolutionary idea.
The future of Apple Watch
This time, the usually complex language of patent applications is accompanied by images that clearly demonstrate Apple's vision for the future of smartwatches.
The document describes a device with external and internal displays, with the internal one consisting of two screens hidden in a folding mechanism, similar to folding smartphones.
One version of the patent envisages a "continuous" display consisting of a single panel with a flexible connection, rather than two separate screens that fold back to back.
It also mentions a rotating moving part that can move around an axis.
Another interesting point in the patent is a two-camera system, one of which will be directed outward and the other inward, which will allow you to take photos and receive video calls on FaceTime.
However, we shouldn't expect to see a foldable Apple Watch Ultra 3 with two cameras in the near future, as the release of such a device is still very far away.
Nevertheless, Apple is at least exploring the possibility of a complete redesign of the Apple Watch. Due to the compact form factor, the current models are limited in their capabilities, and a foldable display could be an innovative solution to this problem.
