On the morning of September 18, the PUMA bulk carrier (Cayman Islands) departed from the Odesa seaport and is heading towards the Bosporus through a temporary corridor, the press service of the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine reported.

The vessel is loaded with 16,000 tons of metal and 14,000 tons of rapeseed.

The bulk carrier entered the Odesa seaport on February 19, 2022, and could not leave the port due to the onset of hostilities and the closure of some regions of the Black Sea.

The Ministry specified that the corridor, designated by the navigation order of the Ukrainian Navy, was primarily used to evacuate vessels in Ukrainian ports such as Chornomorsk, Odesa, and Pivdennyi at the time of the full-scale invasion.

However, considering Russia's blockade of the grain initiative and the increasing global demand for Ukrainian products, Ukraine is considering using this corridor for civilian vessels carrying non-military cargo, including grains, primarily to countries in Africa and Asia.

As stated by the Ministry, four vessels have already used this route since August 15. This corridor is intended to exit civilian ships in Ukrainian ports in Chornomorsk, Odesa, and Pivdennyi since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.

What preceded it?

In July, Russia announced its withdrawal from the "grain deal" due to alleged non-compliance with its terms. After this, occupiers began shelling southern Ukraine's ports and grain infrastructure.

In August, Ukraine announced the opening of temporary corridors in the Black Sea. The Ukrainian Navy emphasized that the threat from Russia is still present. The routes are primarily intended for exiting civilian vessels in Ukrainian ports such as Chornomorsk, Odesa, and Pivdennyi since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.

As known, on August 16, the first vessel departed from the Odesa port after suspending the grain deal.
