What happened
On Sunday, July 21, US President Joe Biden announced that he would not seek re-election for a second term. He made this announcement by posting a letter on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He also stated that he is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor for the US presidency.
Following the news of Biden's decision, some Republicans called for his resignation from the presidency. The White House response was swift.
