What is a black box?
A black box of an aircraft is an onboard recorder that captures important flight data. It consists of two main devices: a cockpit voice recorder, which records sounds in the cockpit (such as conversations, signals, and audible warnings), and a flight data recorder, which logs technical parameters like altitude, speed, and aircraft position. Its primary purpose is to help investigate aviation incidents by analyzing the data to determine the causes of accidents or malfunctions.
Despite its name, the black box is usually bright orange, making it easier to locate after accidents. It is designed to withstand extreme conditions, including high temperatures, strong impacts, and prolonged submersion in water. Due to its reliability, the black box is an essential tool for ensuring aviation safety.
