Meta is launching a new tool called AI Studio, which will allow any user to create AI versions of themselves for Instagram or a website, reports the American tech website The Verge.

Details of the innovation

The main idea is for content creators and business owners to use these AI profiles to interact with their followers on their behalf. They will be able to directly communicate with people in chats and respond to comments on their author's account.

Meta reports that Instagram users in the USA can start using AI Studio via the website or by launching a new "AI chat" directly on Instagram.

In its blog, the company writes: "Creators can customize their AI based on things like their Instagram content, topics to avoid, and links they want it to share."

The message also states that creators will be able to turn on and off features like automatic responses from their AI and specify which specific accounts it is allowed to interact with.

AI Studio also allows for the creation of entirely new AI characters that can be used in various Meta applications. Here, Meta competes with startups like Character.AI and Replika, where people already interact with themed chatbots and even fall in love with them.

Similar to OpenAI's GPT store, Meta will also allow other users to try out the AI characters you've created.

How Meta developed the option

Meta's first attempt at implementing this concept was having several celebrities create AI versions of themselves with the same appearance but different names and personalities.

At the time, Meta explained this approach by its concern that AI versions of celebrities might say problematic things on behalf of their human counterparts.

It seems that Meta, at least, recognizes that this is risky territory. The company reports that AI profiles will be clearly marked wherever they appear.

The guide for creators describes the AI creation process in more detail, and it seems that the responsibility for listing topics that the AI should not respond to lies with the creator.

One example of a question that Meta says can be prohibited from AI responses is: "Should I invest in cryptocurrency?"
