According to the latest data, about 5.5 thousand people live in the village. Korenevo is located on the territory of the Ukrainian ethnic and cultural region of Eastern Slobozhanshchyna.

The village has several industrial facilities and a railway station. Korenevo is home to a plant for producing electrical appliances and components, a grain storage facility, a gas network construction plant, energy companies, other small companies, and an oil depot. According to preliminary data, it is currently not working.

Situation in the village

Yesterday, on August 7, reports began to appear online that the fighting had allegedly reached the village of Korenevo in the Kursk region, meaning that the depth of the border breach has increased to 25-30 kilometers.

The Russian Telegram channel Two Majors, which is critical of the Russian Defense Ministry, claims that Ukrainian forces allegedly approached the village of Korenevo, where they were “stopped with a fight”.

Z-channels close to the Russian Defense Ministry also reported that fighting was taking place on the outskirts of Korenevo. The Russians also claim that Ukrainian forces have allegedly sent their reserves to Korenevo.

On August 7, the head of Korenevsky district, Marina Degtyareva, called on residents to restrict their movement around the village over the escalating situation in the border areas.

“Dear residents of Korenevsky district! Please restrict your movement in the village for your safety,” she said.

Another direction of fighting

During the first two days, the main center of fighting in the Kursk region was the town of Sudzha. It is located a few kilometers from the border with Ukraine, east of the village of Korenevo. The distance between these settlements is about 40 kilometers.

According to a new report by the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian troops could have advanced ten kilometers in the Kursk region.

Online reports claimed that Sudzha was allegedly under the control of Ukrainian forces, while others wrote that the fighting was ongoing. Korenevo has become another area of a breakthrough that greatly expands the gray zone where fighting could potentially continue.

There are several important facilities for Russia in Sudzha, for example, a gas metering station through which Russian gas transits to Europe via Ukraine. There is also a power substation in Sudzha, which supplies a branch from the Kursk NPP to the Belgorod region.

Russian president Vladimir Putin reacted to the events in the Kursk region a day after it began.
