Why Zelenskyy challenges Putin to direct talks: Presidential Office explains

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is ready for direct talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in order to dispel illusions, particularly of the United States, about Moscow's intentions. Russia will not agree to peace unless it is forced to, said Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to the head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, in a commentary to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.
"Why is Ukraine actively engaged in the topic of negotiations in Türkiye today? Why is it involving European partners, consulting at different levels? Why does it support US initiatives regarding the need for talks? Because the world, especially our American partners, needs to rid itself of the illusion that Russia can make responsible decisions without pressure," Podolyak said.
He emphasized that Russia will not take steps to end the war unless it is forced to do so, and Ukraine must demonstrate that to its allies.
According to Podolyak, to put an end to calls for more dialogue, more waiting, or softer approaches with Russia, it’s necessary to go through every stage that will make it absolutely clear: there will be no peace with Russia without pressure.
Zelenskyy open to talks with Putin
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has proposed holding direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul starting May 15 - a move seen as a response to an ultimatum from Ukraine and its European partners demanding a ceasefire.
European nations have warned Moscow that failure to agree to a ceasefire would trigger a new round of tougher sanctions.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy initially said Ukraine would only engage in dialogue after a full ceasefire. However, he later confirmed he is willing to personally meet with Putin in Türkiye on May 15.
Moscow has not yet officially confirmed Putin's participation, nor has it disclosed the composition of its delegation. Turkish officials say they still don’t know who will represent Russia at the talks.
Zelenskyy, however, made clear that he will speak only with Putin, not with Kremlin envoys. He stated that, should Putin attend, the discussion would focus on a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange.
US President Donald Trump has said he does not rule out a visit to Türkiye. He is currently on a visit to the Middle East.
