Ukrainian Forces establish long-term presence in Kursk region: Expert identifies signs
Ukrainian troops are likely planning to establish a long-term presence in the Kursk region, as indicated by certain signs, stated Oleksandr Musiienko, head of the Center for Military-Legal Studies.
"In my opinion, there are all the prospects and possibilities that Ukraine will hold the Kursk region. Moreover, I see that preparations are already underway for this. Besides the ongoing offensive operation, which is particularly focused to the north and west, there is also a noticeable defensive operation and counteraction against Russian counterattacks to the east," he explained.
According to him, this means that Ukrainian forces are stabilizing the situation and the front line, anticipating that they might need to shift to a defensive mode for holding these territories and strengthening defensive lines.
"This is noticeable today. Therefore, I think it indicates that Ukrainian troops are indeed considering a scenario where they will remain in the Kursk region for the long term," Musiienko stated.
Ukrainian advance in the Kursk region
In August, Ukrainian forces launched an offensive in the Kursk region, which has been ongoing for nearly a month.
As of late August, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that Ukraine had gained control over 100 settlements and 1,294 square kilometers in the Kursk region. Additionally, Ukrainian forces managed to capture nearly 600 Russian soldiers.
Currently, the pace of the Ukrainian advance in the Kursk region has slowed. For more details on why the Kursk operation has "cooled down" and whether the Russian forces might launch a counterattack, read the material by RBC-Ukraine.
