The statements made by elected US President Donald Trump about Greenland and Panama are "information noise." Specific details may emerge after the inauguration on January 20, states historian and diplomat Roman Bezsmertnyi in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.

According to him, Trump has tasked the formation of a group for negotiations with the governments of Denmark and Panama regarding joint actions with certain Pacific island nations.

"There are a number of military bases there, which are either used on a rental basis or under temporary stay conditions. But what is being discussed now is that Trump is so 'talented' that he might use the military. If you look at American social media right now, it's a mix that will make you laugh. You can check out the memes about Trump that are appearing," Bezsmertnyi said.

In his opinion, Trump has a habit of "making a noise around himself and then leaving." The expert noted that Trump's statements came at a time when the Capitol was bidding farewell to the 39th US President, Jimmy Carter.

"Moreover, Trump acted like an uncivilized person, attacking Jimmy Carter during a press briefing over the same Panama issue, and so on. Clearly, he was playing his traditional game to fill the information space 100%. So, let's approach this with the understanding that this is all Trump’s doing. Now, the first comments from Michael Waltz are emerging, followed by Kellogg. I think after the appointment of Rubio as Secretary of State, there will be different comments, and then we can start talking about something more specific," he emphasized.

Trump’s 'claims' on Greenland and Panama

Trump announced the possibility of using military or economic actions to acquire Greenland, which Denmark refused to sell. Greenland's Prime Minister and the European Union called for the respect of the island’s sovereignty, while media sources see Trump’s actions as a response to the growing influence of Russia and China in the strategically important Arctic region.

He also accused Panama of charging excessive fees for the use of the Panama Canal. He criticized the decision by former US President Jimmy Carter to return control of the Panama Canal to Panama.
