Former US President Donald Trump is unlikely to oppose selling weapons to Ukraine. He seeks a pragmatic relationship between the two countries, stated Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, in a commentary to RBC-Ukraine's YouTube channel.

Podolyak commented on the possibility that Trump will make a political decision to sell weapons to Ukraine.

"Trump will sell (weapons - ed.). Because it's a lobby — the main sponsors of the Republican Party. They are interested in monetizing relations with Ukraine in the context of the war. Moreover, American weapons have proven to Russian or any other weapons," Podolyak emphasized.

He said the the only issue is logistics and communications at different platforms. The US aims to build pragmatic ties with Ukraine, including the development of new initiatives under the minerals deal.

"It makes no sense to claim strategic partnership and then say, 'No, we won't sell weapons, even though it's profitable for us'. That would be strange," Podolyak added.

He also clarified that Trump's early departure from the G7 summit, where a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was planned, had nothing to do with reluctance to discuss arms sales.

Podolyak noted that G7 leaders are pressuring Trump to stop playing diplomatic games with Russia and start applying pressure on Moscow.

"As for weapons sales, I believe Ukraine will achieve what he needs. That is, we will buy. Everything we uniquely require is available in sufficient quantities in US stockpiles," he concluded.

Trump left G7 summit early

From June 15 to 17, Canada hosted the G7 Summit. US President Donald Trump, however, left before the final day of the event.

Trump was scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on June 17.

According to Zelenskyy, he intended to discuss the possibility of purchasing American-made weapons during the meeting with his US counterpart.
