Political analyst weighs Harris's chances against Trump in debate
US presidential candidate Kamala Harris will hold out in debates with Donald Trump, but a dramatic success is unlikely, stated political analyst Oleh Saakyan in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine.
"I think Harris will hold out. But, to be honest, I don’t expect any dramatic success from her in the debates. It seems to me that expectations for her are overstated, and expectations for Trump are understated. This will work against her," Saakyan said.
He noted that Trump clearly demonstrated the ability to control himself during his first debates with current US President Joe Biden. He did not let emotions take over more than necessary and managed the situation well.
"On the other hand, Biden sometimes lost his composure. They managed to present Trump in a way that was unexpected and hard to predict. In other words, they are able to surprise," added the political analyst.
In his view, Trump is preparing to "shake up" Harris.
"Trump now has a very wide field of maneuver. He has already demonstrated everything he could. On one hand, there is nothing left to surprise with, but on the other hand, he has nothing to lose. For Kamala, these debates will be like walking through a minefield. And the mines are being laid by Trump’s team in advance. Therefore, who wins these debates will significantly impact the future trajectory of the campaign. There is still time ahead, and a lot can change during that period," Saakyan noted.
Debates between Trump and Harris
Today, September 10, the US will witness debates between presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
After a week of disagreements, Harris agreed to adhere to the rules for the June debates, where each candidate's microphone will be turned off while their opponent speaks.
Harris's team had insisted on having microphones constantly on, which is usually the norm for presidential debates.
