A video has circulated online showing a drone flying over Kharkiv with an open parachute. People began speculating about what it is and whether it is dangerous, the situation was explained in a comment to RBC-Ukraine by Major Dmytro Kyryshun, commander of the Archangel UAV battalion of the 114th Territorial Defense Brigade.

What kind of drone is this?

According to the military officer, such devices are not new. This is a reconnaissance drone, launched from a catapult and equipped with a parachute for safe landing.

"To prevent the drone from being damaged upon landing, its parachute opens, allowing it to descend smoothly to the landing site. That’s why I believe this is a reconnaissance drone," explained Kyryshun.

Such cases have happened before. Moreover, parachute-equipped drones are also used by the Ukrainian army.

"We use them as well. Some of our drone lines include drones with parachutes. They can also return home, so this could even be one of our drones. We’ve had such cases before — this is nothing new," noted the major.

Is there a threat to people?

According to the military officer — no. The parachute serves only to protect the drone itself during landing.

"It’s unlikely to pose any danger to the population," emphasized Kyryshun.

RBC-Ukraine previously reported that Russia is changing its targets for strikes. Ukraine has the technology to repel attacks, but funding blockages remain an obstacle.

The ISW has also warned about changes in Russia’s attack tactics in Ukraine. Russia is now striking for longer periods and over wider areas.
