Russian forces are attempting to bypass Pokrovsk from the west and break through near Kostiantynivka. In these areas of the Donetsk region, the enemy is trying to cut off key routes and create encirclements, said military expert Ivan Stupak in a commentary to the RBC-Ukraine's YouTube channel.

According to him, as of today, the most challenging areas are the Kursk and Sumy regions.

"In Sumy, 85 square kilometers are in the grey zone. Our military reports that regular Russian troops have been there since early March. This is an unpleasant moment. On the positive side, we've managed to recapture a small part of the territory near Lyptsi, in the Kharkiv region," Stupak said.

The expert refrained from commenting on whether this was a Ukrainian offensive or if Russia had carelessly pulled back its forces, allowing Ukrainian troops to take control of these positions, but added, "In any case, this area is now marked as Ukrainian."

"Among the most tense areas is Pokrovsk and everything around it. The Russians aim to bypass Pokrovsk through the Dnipropetrovsk region, advancing from the west, cutting off the Pokrovsk-Pavlohrad road, and thus severing our communication," Stupak noted.

On the other hand, he mentioned the area of Novoolenivka, located between Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk.

"The Russians are cutting off this road and are trying to create a pincer movement. So, the pincers around Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka… I’m not saying it’s happening this month or even the next, but on the horizon, they are visible," the expert added.

Russia's spring offensive

Recently, Pavlo Palisa, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, said that Russian troops may intensify their offensive at the front in late April and May. The Pokrovsk direction is a priority for Russia.

The enemy may also advance on the eastern fronts near Kupiansk (Kharkiv region) and Lyman (Donetsk region), as well as on the south-eastern fronts around Zaporizhzhia and Novopavlivka.

In addition, the Russian forces intend to enter the Dnipropetrovsk region by May 9. During the parade in Moscow, Vladimir Putin wants to demonstrate that his troops are advancing in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi also said that Russia has launched a new offensive in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions.

According to him, for almost a week now, Ukraine has been recording almost a twofold increase in the number of Russian offensives.

The Commander-in-Chief noted that Russia wants to create a buffer zone in Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions.
