Crossroads for peace process: Why US-Ukraine talks in Jeddah matter

The talks between Ukraine and the US in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) are significant in terms of concrete outcomes. In particular, there may be an agreement on when and how direct negotiations with Russia will begin, stated political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko in a comment to RBC-Ukraine's YouTube channel.
"These talks in Jeddah are important in terms of concrete results. There may be some specific outcomes. For example, we need to agree on when and how direct talks with Russia will begin. The Ukrainian side may insist on this," Fesenko said.
According to him, Ukraine and the US may also find common ground on the issue of a ceasefire.
"But still, negotiations with Russia need to start afterward, because a ceasefire needs to be agreed upon by both sides. But for us, these talks must show whether there will be a peace process through compromise or if it will become clear that the Trump administration is demanding unilateral concessions from Ukraine to Russia, and these concessions are unacceptable to us," the political scientist noted.
And then, he said, it would mean that, with high probability, the negotiation process would lose its meaning.
"So, this could be a kind of crossroads for the future peace process," Fesenko added.
Talks in Saudi Arabia
Tomorrow, March 11, talks between the Ukrainian and American delegations are set to take place in Saudi Arabia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Saudi Arabia today, but he will not participate in the talks.
It is known that the US delegation will include US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian delegation will include at least the Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak, and Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov.
