Zelenskyy: Ukraine ready to support Syria after Assad's fall
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief today, discussing cooperation between Ukraine and Syria.
The meeting focused on relations with Syria after the fall of the regime and the escape of Bashar al-Assad. There were reports from the Foreign Intelligence Service and the Defense Intelligence, as well as the Defense Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
“We are determining our strategy and concrete steps. Ukraine is interested in stabilizing the situation in Syria and the region and will support the necessary efforts of its partners,” Zelenskyy said.
For the security of the people of Syria and the region, it is necessary to remove any Russian presence in the country, Zelenskyy believes.
“We are grateful to every country and every leader who is now ready to help Syrian society restore normal life and build effective state institutions. We will definitely support the people of Syria in food security. All the necessary decisions have been made on our part, and Ukraine is ready to supply food,” the president said.
The fall of the Assad regime in Syria
Last month, active fighting broke out in Syria between the rebels of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group and the units of the Syrian National Army and the army of dictator Bashar al-Assad.
In early December, the rebels captured key cities in Syria, including the capital Damascus. Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia, where he was granted asylum by Vladimir Putin.
On December 10, rebel-affiliated Mohammed al-Bashir was appointed interim prime minister. He will head the government until March 1, 2025.
