President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy will impose sanctions on two participants in a corruption scheme in the energy sector uncovered by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), according to the President's address and RBC-Ukraine's sources.
What Zelenskyy said
The President noted that the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine will soon issue a decision on sanctions based on a proposal from the Cabinet of Ministers.
He emphasized that Ukrainians are currently facing extremely difficult times, enduring power outages, Russian strikes, and losses.
"It is absolutely unacceptable that there are still any corruption schemes in the energy sector under these conditions. I will sign a decree imposing sanctions against two individuals mentioned in the NABU case involving Energoatom," Zelenskyy added.
Information from sources
According to RBC-Ukraine’s informed sources, the National Security and Defense Council has received a proposal to impose sanctions against businessman Tymur Mindich and Oleksandr Zuckerman.
Operation Midas
Earlier, NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) uncovered a criminal organization that ran an illegal scheme in the energy sector.
Members of the organization forced Energoatom’s contractors to pay bribes to retain their supplier status and avoid blocked payments.
As sources told RBC-Ukraine, the scheme’s curator was businessman and former business partner of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Tymur Mindich.
The scheme also involved Justice Minister Herman Halushchenko and other officials.
On November 12, it became known that Halushchenko and Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk were suspended from their positions. Zelenskyy stated that they would need to be dismissed.
