Ukraine could have seized the Kursk nuclear power plant in the city of Kurchatov. But it did not want to do so, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Russia thinks that they are very strong, but if we wanted to occupy their nuclear station, we could do it, but we never wanted,” the President says.

The head of state emphasizes that Ukraine had never wanted to seize the nuclear power plant in the Kursk region, as it would mean becoming like Russians.

“We are not occupying their critical infrastructure, like they did with the Zaporizhzhia nuclear station,” Zelenskyy adds.

Kursk operation

Ukrainian troops launched an operation in the Kursk region in early August. The Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to advance tens of kilometers and occupy about 100 settlements. Recently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the creation of a buffer zone.

Earlier, Zelenskyy explained that the Kursk operation was a kind of preemptive strike, as the Russians wanted to break through the border in Sumy region. The Head of State emphasized that the breakthrough in the Kursk region was only part of the operation.

According to him, the Ukrainian Armed Forces' operation had another task - to increase the exchange fund, which would facilitate exchanges.

Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine wants to hold the territory in the Kursk region until dictator Vladimir Putin sits down at the negotiating table.
