Zelenskyy meets with Israeli President, discusses common challenges
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with his Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog. The parties raised issues of common challenges for both countries, the Ukrainian President's Office reports.
“The Ukrainian President highlighted the importance of freeing hostages. He noted that Ukrainians deeply understand the pain of having loved ones held in captivity and share the joy when people return home from captivity,” the Presidential Office writes.
During the talks, the President also expressed hope for further security and stability in the entire Middle East region.
In particular, the parties discussed challenges common to both countries and agreed on areas for further cooperation, especially in the security sector.
The Presidential Office adds that the main topics of the talks also included ways to achieve a just and sustainable peace.
Situation in Gaza Strip
On January 16, Tel Aviv and the Islamist Hamas movement signed an agreement on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages. Last week, the Israeli Security Cabinet and the government approved the agreement, which took effect on Sunday, January 19.
On Sunday, Hamas released three civilian women, Romi Gonen, Emily Damari, and Doron Steinbrecher.
