Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may not attend the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican. However, Ukraine will be represented at the event, the head of state made this statement while laying flowers near a building destroyed in a strike in the Sviatoshynskyi district.

He noted that it is important for Ukraine to be represented at the funeral. The reason lies not only in the good relations with the Vatican, but also in the Holy See’s assistance in returning Ukrainian children and facilitating prisoner exchanges, as well as his own good personal relationship with the Pope.

According to the president, Ukraine wants to express its condolences to both the Vatican and Italy.

“If I don’t make it in time, Ukraine will be represented at a proper level. The Foreign Minister (Andrii Sybiha – ed.) and the First Lady (Olena Zelenska – ed.) will attend,” Zelenskyy clarified.

He added that it is important for him to remain in Ukraine. Several military meetings are scheduled for today, including discussions on air defense system contracts.

“I’ve already held a number of meetings, and there will be more, including a Staff meeting where several classified issues will be discussed — both regarding the recent strike and Ukraine’s corresponding actions. I don’t know how long it will take, so if I can make it, I will definitely attend, because this is important for Ukraine,” the president said.
