Zelenskyy is fighting for national survival, like Lincoln — Kellogg

US Presidential Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg drew parallels between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the 16th US President Abraham Lincoln during a speech at the German Marshall Fund forum in Brussels.
Kellogg emphasized that he had tried to convey to US President Donald Trump the importance of Zelenskyy's efforts to achieve peace, comparing the Ukrainian leader's fight for national survival and sovereignty to that of Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War.
He noted that understanding Ukraine's current battlefield challenges requires recognizing the scale of what the country is defending.
Kellogg also noted that the West does not always fully grasp the situation in Ukraine or understand what Ukrainians are going through. He pointed out that there is often a lack of perspective and empathy, even though Western nations are making significant efforts to help.
For context, Abraham Lincoln led the United States during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865 — the last major armed conflict fought on US soil.
Zelenskyy-Trump meeting
The Office of the President of Ukraine recently stated it hopes to organize a meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit on June 15–17.
The last meeting between the leaders took place on April 26 at the Vatican. Both had arrived to attend the farewell ceremony for Pope Francis.
The meeting lasted only 15 minutes, but both leaders described it as productive.
Earlier today, Zelenskyy confirmed that he expects to meet with the American leader Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit on June 15–17. The head of state also shared what he plans to discuss with Trump.
