President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the possibility of expanding mobilization, noting that it is one of the most difficult issues for the state, the army, and society, he said this in an interview with Bloomberg.
When asked by a journalist about increasing mobilization due to temporary retreats at the front, the head of state explained, "The question of people, of course, is the most sensitive and difficult for me, for soldiers, for people, for society and for partners."
Zelenskyy emphasized that the size of the Ukrainian army cannot be compared with the Russian one because of the difference in the scale of the countries. He stressed that even if the military requests more mobilization, the needs of society must be taken into account: people are working, paying taxes, and this money goes to defense.
"So you have to find a balance," the president added.
According to him, the current mobilization system operates based on the army’s decision, which has set a draft of about 30,000 people per month. Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine’s partners raise this issue, but they are not on the battlefield and do not face the realities the country is dealing with.
Mobilization in Ukraine
The Verkhovna Rada (parliament) recently approved an extension of martial law and general mobilization in Ukraine for another 90 days — until February 3, 2026.
This is already the 17th extension of this legal regime since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Denys Shmyhal stated that the current level of mobilization in Ukraine is sufficient to replenish personnel and create reserves.
According to him, mobilization in Ukraine is proceeding according to plan and is generally taking place without major scandals.
