Zelenskyy convinced US that Ukraine can win the war, Politico says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during his visit to the United States on July 28, achieved a result that seemed impossible just a year ago. He convinced Washington that Ukraine can win the war with Russia, reports Politico.
Unlike Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House in February 2025, when a dispute with Donald Trump broke out in the Oval Office, this time the Ukrainian president left his meeting with the US president in an optimistic mood.
Politico notes that the situation in Washington has improved for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy’s trip also ended with another victory when senators voted for Lindsey Graham’s bill to impose sanctions on countries that buy Russian oil.
The vote brought the US Congress one step closer to achieving Zelenskyy’s priority and became another signal that Kyiv’s position is improving not only on the battlefield.
However, the document still has to pass all stages of approval, and the White House’s final position on it remains unclear.
According to US lawmakers, the main topics of talks between Zelenskyy and American senators were strengthening sanctions pressure on Moscow, military aid for Ukraine, and prospects for peace negotiations.
During his visit to the US Capitol, the Ukrainian leader emphasized that sanctions could help consolidate the successes of the Defense Forces on the front lines and compel Putin to enter into peace negotiations. These arguments have begun to produce results, as senators from both parties supported Zelenskyy’s strategy.
At the meeting, the Ukrainian president also emphasized the need to expand military support for Ukraine.
Discussions focused on licenses for the production of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems, the supply of PAC-3 interceptor missiles, and ensuring uninterrupted access to Starlink satellite communications for strikes deep inside Russian territory.
Zelenskyy’s visit to the United States
On July 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington and met with US President Donald Trump.
The leaders discussed the production of interceptors for Patriot air defense systems, the intensification of the negotiation process, and other issues.
According to Trump, the meeting went very well.
The US Senate, during a procedural vote, supported a bill to strengthen sanctions against Russia and Iran, one of the authors of which was Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
While visiting the United States, Zelenskyy met with more than 60 American senators. The sanctions against Russia have not yet been finally approved, as they still require another Senate vote, which lawmakers plan to complete before August, after which the matter will move to the House of Representatives.
