President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy supports the idea of US President Donald Trump taking part in possible negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, according to the Ukrainian head of state on Telegram.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to Trump’s statement that he could travel to Istanbul for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. According to him, these are very important words.

The President of Ukraine reminded that he supported Trump’s idea of a complete and unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days to lay the foundation for diplomacy. Ukraine wants this and is ready to ensure silence.

Zelenskyy also added that he supported Trump’s idea of direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He assured that he would be in Türkiye and hoped that Russia would not ignore the meeting.

"Of course, all of us in Ukraine would like President Trump to be there with us at this meeting in Türkiye. It's the right idea. We can change a lot," Zelenskyy said.

He clarified that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan "can host the meeting at the highest level."

What did Trump say?

On May 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected an unconditional ceasefire with Ukraine for 30 days. Instead, he suggested starting direct negotiations on May 15 in Istanbul.

In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised that he would personally fly to Istanbul and wait for Russian President Vladimir Putin there.

Already today, May 12, US President Donald Trump acknowledged that he could take part in such negotiations.
