Ukraine–Cyprus relations
In early December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a joint press conference with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides that Cyprus would assume the presidency of the Council of the European Union from Denmark in the first half of 2026.
According to Zelenskyy, the Cypriot presidency could be significant for Ukraine, especially in the context of opening negotiation clusters for EU accession.
At the same time, on December 31, Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos stated that during its presidency, his country would propose a "new approach" to accession talks with Ukraine and would also focus on key challenges, including defense and migration.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides also emphasized that support for Ukraine would be a priority of the Cypriot presidency, which began on January 1.
Cyprus has expressed interest in developing cooperation with Ukraine in the defense sector, including the procurement of unmanned systems and the exploration of the potential use of artificial intelligence.
