Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone conversation with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. They discussed a personal meeting in the near future, according to Zelenskyy and Fico.
"We need strong relations between our states, and we are both interested in this. It was important to hear that Slovakia supports Ukraine's membership in the European Union and is ready to share its accession experience," Zelenskyy said.
He invited Fico to visit Kyiv and thanked him for his invitation to come to Bratislava.
They also discussed the possibility of a personal meeting in the near future.
"Our teams will work on scheduling," the Ukrainian president added.
The Slovak prime minister, in turn, said that despite "different views on certain issues," both sides are interested in establishing good and friendly relations.
Fico also stated that Slovakia supports Ukraine's EU membership, as it wants its neighboring country to "be stable and democratic."
According to the Slovak prime minister, they agreed with Zelenskyy to meet on the sidelines of the European Political Community Summit, which will take place on May 4 in Yerevan.
As a reminder, earlier media reports said that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico had promised to continue anti-European rhetoric after the electoral defeat of his ally, former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. However, it is unlikely he will be able to implement this.
Slovakia is heavily dependent on EU assistance, and Fico’s own political position is less stable than Orbán’s. Therefore, it will be difficult for the Slovak prime minister to fulfill his role.
