Your iPhone battery naturally loses capacity over time, but poor charging habits can speed up the process significantly.

BGR highlights four common mistakes you should avoid if you want your iPhone battery to last longer.

Charging your iPhone to 100% all the time

Although seeing a full battery may seem ideal, lithium-ion batteries don't perform well when kept at maximum charge.

Staying at 100% exposes the battery to high-voltage stress, accelerating chemical aging. During the final stage of charging, energy storage also becomes less efficient, and excess power is converted into heat, which further degrades the battery.

If you own an iPhone 15 or newer, you can set a hard charging limit.

To enable it:

  • Open Settings
  • Go to Battery
  • Tap Charging
  • Set your preferred charging limit (for example, 80%)

Ignoring Optimized Battery Charging

The ideal battery range is generally considered to be between 20% and 80% (the so-called 80/20 rule). This helps avoid stress caused by both very low and very high charge levels.

However, manually following this rule isn't practical, especially if you leave your phone plugged in overnight.

That's why iOS includes Optimized Battery Charging. The system learns your daily routine and pauses charging at 80%, then finishes charging shortly before you typically wake up or start using your phone.

To enable the feature, go to Settings > Battery > Charging and turn on Optimized Battery Charging.

Running demanding apps while charging

Smartphone processors don't have built-in cooling fans, so heat depends entirely on how intensive your tasks are.

Checking emails generates very little heat, while 3D games such as PUBG Mobile push the processor to its limits.

Since charging already increases battery temperature as lithium ions move through the battery, running resource-intensive apps at the same time creates double the heat load.

This can lead to excessive overheating and permanently damage the battery. It's best to let your iPhone rest while it's charging.

Using uncertified chargers

Apple devices are built to last, but cheap knockoff chargers and low-quality cables can seriously damage your iPhone.

Low-quality power adapters often fail to regulate current properly, increasing the risk of overheating, damaging the charging port, or even burning out components on the logic board.

When buying charging accessories:

  • Choose original Apple chargers or trusted brands with MFi (Made for iPhone) certification.
  • Look for the official MFi logo on the packaging.
  • If you're unsure, verify the manufacturer through Apple's official MFi database using the brand name or product code.

High-quality certified chargers, such as 20W Yaptech or 60W Linocell fast chargers, provide full compatibility and help keep your iPhone safe.
