Chinese President Xi Jinping hopes to see a fair peace agreement on Ukraine. It will be the latest step in his attempts to improve relations with Europe amid a trade war with the US, according to Bloomberg and Reuters.

Xi Jinping's position on the war in Ukraine

According to the media, Xi Jinping told Kremlin President Vladimir Putin during a tea conversation in Moscow on May 8 that China hopes that a “a fair, lasting and binding peace deal that is accepted by all parties involved” can be reached through dialogue.

“While Xi didn’t elaborate on what a possible deal should look like, the comment appears to be the first time the Chinese leader has personally laid out principles for an agreement to end the Kremlin’s war,” the article reads.

Importantly, Xi Jinping's remarks echoed a March statement by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who said that all parties to the conflict are seeking a “fair and durable peace deal that is binding and accepted by all.”

Xi's remarks also came after Trump said that it would be natural for him to ask China to help with a deal between Ukraine and Russia. In a post on social media, the US leader called for a 30-day ceasefire to pave the way for negotiations, threatening to impose additional sanctions if the truce is violated.

Both Russia and China have said that Russia's war against Ukraine can be resolved, allegedly only by addressing the “root causes” - a phrase Russia often uses when claiming that it was “forced to start a war” to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO.

Joint statement by Xi Jinping and Putin

Chinese President Xi Jinping also told Russian President Vladimir Putin that their two countries should be “friends of steel” as they vowed to take cooperation to a new level and decisively resist US influence.

In a lengthy joint statement, they said they would deepen relations in all areas, including military ties, and “strengthen coordination in order to decisively counter Washington's course of 'dual containment' of Russia and China.”

Putin-Xi meeting

On May 9, Vladimir Putin holds a traditional parade in Moscow. As part of it, Chinese leader Xi Jinping is on a four-day visit to Russia. Earlier, the media learned one of the topics of the talks between Putin and Xi Jinping.

Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin met in Moscow on May 8. They made a number of statements, exchanging complementary phrases.

During the talks, Putin said that Russia would welcome the emergence of Chinese production facilities on its territory.
