In an interview with ABC News, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff said he hopes the upcoming conversation between the US and Russian Presidents will be successful. Witkoff believes it could help advance the peace process in Ukraine.

"I believe that the president (Donald Trump -ed.) is going to have a successful call with Vladimir Putin. They know each other. The president is determined to get something done here... So, I leave it to the two leaders to have that call," Witkoff said.

When asked whether Russia "is asking for too much" in the negotiations — something US Vice President JD Vance previously stated — Trump's special envoy avoided answering directly.

"My assessment is that this is a very complicated conflict that shouldn't have happened. I completely agree with President Trump in that regard," he said.

Witkoff also noted that there is a lot of hatred between Ukraine and Russia. That is why both sides hold firm positions. The task of US President Donald Trump is to narrow this "wide berth between the parties."

"And I think, to some extent, we've done that... And I think Monday will go a long way towards identifying where we are and how we complete this negotiation," Trump's special envoy concluded.

Trump to call Putin and Zelenskyy

Yesterday, Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he will hold phone talks with Vladimir Putin. They will discuss ending the war in Ukraine and trade issues.

After that, Trump will call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Then, together with Zelenskyy, he will speak with various NATO member countries.

The US leader hoped these talks would be a step toward a ceasefire.
